The Hiwassee Chapter of the American Red Cross offers safety and health education, Certified
Nursing Assistant training, service to the armed forces, their families and veterans, assistance
to single-family residence fire victims, disaster preparedness and relief, and community
volunteer services. The chapter also operates the Emergency Aid Program, providing help with
rent and utilities, and information and referral, to those in need who qualify for assistance.

Boy Scouts of America programs include Cub Scouts for boys ages 6 to 11, Boy Scouts for
young men ages 11 to 18, and Venturing and Exploring programs for young men and women
ages 14 to 21. The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America, Cherokee Area Council, is to provide
an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the
responsibilities of participating in citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland provide youth development for boys and girls, ages 6 to

The Cleveland Family Branch helps infants through senior citizens develop their spirit, mind
and body through programs and activities that promote health, fitness, values, moral and family
principles. Financial assistance for membership or programs is available through
scholarships for those who apply and qualify.

The Y-Cap program, administered through the Cleveland Family YMCA, is an intensive
intervention program for children ages 10 to 14 referred through the juvenile court system or
local school system aimed at turning self-destructive behavior into positive, healthy activity.

Financial assistance for two routes of the Home-Delivered Meals Program is provided by
United Way. The program is a service providing nutritious meals and direct social contact to
homebound elderly and handicapped residents.

The Learning Center for Adults and Families staff and volunteers are dedicated to enhancing
the lives of adults and families by offering instruction in basic skills including: reading, math,
writing and job-related skills. All services provided by the center are free.

The Partnership provides assistance to Cleveland, Bradley County and Polk County residents
in the forms of Homemaker services and Consumer Credit Counseling. The Homemaker
services program provides trained persons to assist elderly or handicapped persons to
continue to live in their own homes. Consumer Credit Counseling provides budget counseling,
voluntary debt management and consumer financial education.

Funds raised by the Polk County campaign are used to provide temporary rent, medicine and
utilities for emergency needs in Polk County. These funds are administered by the American
Red Cross' Hiwassee Chapter.

The Signal Center serves preschool children up to six years old who have mental and/or
physical development delays. The center offers a program of individualized learning activities
and specialized on-site therapies.

TEAM Centers helps children and adults who have handicaps, developmental challenges, or
are at-risk, maximize their potential by providing diagnostic, referral and follow-up service. The
Family Support Program improves the quality of the lives of families who have a member with a
severe disability by providing funding for respite, medical equipment and supplies, etc., that
they need to reside in their natural home.

Welfare Organizations, and meet other standards to ensure accountability to United Way
contributors.
